Game Report:
South Australia has staged a dramatic comeback to win a place in the 19/U final of the National Championships, after last minute heroics from inspirational goal shooter Jessica Hazel.

Both teams got off to a solid start, mounting a full court defensive effort. The ball was turned over a number of times early as the pressure applied by both teams was outstanding.

NSW got the first break through opportunities created by goal keeper Lauren Russell. Russell was so strong on the rebounds and was rewarded down the other end by shooters Chelsea Pitman and Kimberly Borger.

Jessica Hazel kept SA in touch making the most of her scoring opportunities but it was NSW who went into the first break 8-4 in front.

SA came out of the break a more determined outfit, cutting back the deficit in a matter on minutes. Khao Watts injected some spark into the SA line through the centre however continued to make several costly feeding errors.

NSW were starved of the ball for the majority of the quarter as Borger struggled to find her rhythm after some tight marking from Nadia Mapunda. SA made NSW work tirelessly to penetrate the circle edge but when they did hit the mark, Pitman was there to sweetly sink shots from anywhere.

NSW led 14-10 at half time.

Both teams made several changes however it was again SA that made a better to start the quarter, hitting the first four shots to tie up the match. Megan Vine made an immediate impact in the shooting circle at goal attack while Jessica Hazel when on strike in shooter leading the SA resurgence.

NSW began to make unforced errors in attack and substitute goal attack Breeanna Powell was tentative on her shot, putting extra pressure on Pitman who also struggled to find her target. Pitman was engaged in an absorbing battle with Mapunda who was doing a great job at shutting down the baseline and making her work overtime for the ball.

After an impressive third term by SA, the margin was only two going into the final quarter.

NSW introduced their fourth goaler for the match with Amy Wild coming on to replace Powell who failed to deliver. SA was the first to score in the final term and had several chances to level early but spoilt possession.

Wild slotted in nicely to the NSW attack as SA continued to mount the challenge. Chances again presented themselves and Jessica Hazel nailed an inspirational long range shot to tie the match up at 23 a piece. SA then got the crucial break of the centre.

Pitman missed a precious shot for NSW and Mapunda pulled in the rebound to send the ball flying down court for SA. The ball arrived safely in the hot hands of Hazel who sealed their fate. Hazel stood up to the pressure with admirable courage to give SA the vital break and inevitably the match 28-27.

SA will now meet Victoria in the final and after today’s heroics; they will be brimming with confidence.
